Sight words app review: Sight Words and Spelling with Pixopop
Sight Words and Spelling With Pixopop is a brand new sight words app for the iPad from Marcel Widarto of Sogabee, the developer of Sight Words Hangman. I had the pleasure of testing the app via test flight before it was released and was even able to use it with my eight-year-old son to study for his last few spelling tests of the school year. Counting the two of us, this app gets four thumbs up!
Sight Words and Spelling makes nice use of bright and friendly characters created by Pixopop and licensed for use especially in this app. Kids can select from three cute characters, Draco the boy, Pinku the girl, and Stitch the blue bunny. There is a Flash Card section that allows children to study spelling and sight words in a traditional flash card fashion. The Word Challenge mode narrates each word from a list and allows the child to select the correct spelling of the spoken word. Each correct answer fills in a section of a character’s outline until the picture is complete. (Sort of like the hangman game but in reverse.) Finally, in the Spelling mode the narrator calls out a word for the child to spell (type) using a keyboard.
While the app includes several of the most common sight words lists pre-made, my favorite (and perhaps the most useful) feature of the app is the ability to create and use custom spelling lists. I was able to help my son create and record his entire spelling list, which he was able to use (without complaint!) in each of the app’s three modes in preparation for his weekly spelling test. One suggestion I have is when you help your child record each word, also record the word being used in a sentence. This worked especially well for us because we noticed several words that sound the same but spelled differently were included in my son’s lists and by hearing the words used in a sentence he was correctly able to distinguish between them and spell the words correctly.
As a mom, anything I can do to encourage my child to do his spelling homework is worthwhile, and Sight Words and Spelling with Pixopop accomplishes this goal beautifully. I look forward to seeing more apps from this developer in the future.
