“Honey, do you hear me? Hello…. Are you listening?”
My husband is in his own world. Of course, he took his iPad with him. Ambient music flows from his iPad as he calmly taps away in a rhythmic manner. About the time I notice what he is doing, he becomes aware of my intrusion and politely explains that he is playing a new game he found for his iPad. I lean over his shoulder and watch him methodically tap circles, which coincide with the atmospheric music as though he is composing it himself. He makes it look easy. I want a turn, so he reluctantly hands it over.
The app is called Pulse:Volume One, and is created by a Philadelphia-based indie game company called Cipher Prime. I begin with the tutorial. I am immediately drawn in by the unique mix of addictive game play and meditative sound experience. I must admit it is harder than it looks. My husband excitedly coaches me in the background as I keep shushing him so I can experience the app on my own. Now I understand why the developers recommend using earphones for better sound experience. (Just kidding, sweetie.) Timing is everything, and when I get it right I am rewarded by harmonious colors in time with the music. Missed pulses result in a temporary upset to the rhythm, which contributes to the addictive nature of the game. I find myself wanting to keep playing so that I can maintain the beautiful, rhythmic flow of the game. Pulse tames the frenzied nature of most addictive tap games with a calming melody that I really enjoy.
According to their website, Cipher Prime also plans to regularly release additional free tracks from local Philadelphia musicians, featuring a variety of musical styles. I wonder if I will find the more challenging levels and less atmospheric soundtracks as enjoyable… I can’t wait to find out!
